The prostate is a part of male anatomy that sits right up against the urinary bladder. The prostate has the vas deferens (where the sperm enter in from the testicles) and the urethra coming into it where it combines together inside to make for a single output urethra out of the penis. The prostate is responsible for combining together sperm with seminal fluid. It grows from hormones released in the body at puberty to become much larger and able to handle its job correctly.

This anatomy is important to see how things go wrong with prostate issues (pathophysiology). The hormones that convert and grow your prostate at puberty skyrocket in levels at puberty and that is where much of our changes come about including the growth of the prostate. Although these levels come down significantly after a while and normalize they don't go away completely. Fast forward a few decades and there could be too much growth happening in the prostate. Most of the time this starts as a benign growth and is very slow growing, hence benign prostatic hyperplasia (fancy word from cell growth). Also, this could go the route of prostatitis or both even. Because there are more prostate cells or more sloughing off this can make a PSA level high. Technically a PSA level is only an indicator of the growth, but because cancer is also a growth they use this indication to further investigate with a digital reading or possible ultrasound or even biopsy.

Because of the close proximity of the prostate to the bladder and the urethra going through it, these problems are often discovered from urinary problems.
